ATHERTON COMMUNITY PUB REOPENS FOLLOWING £170,000 MAKEOVER

The Kings Head, formerly The Weavers Rest, located at 8 Market Place in Atherton, officially reopened on Friday 8th August following a significant investment of £170,000. The pub is part of Proper Pubs, the award-winning community wet-led operator division of Admiral Taverns, which operates more than 200 pubs across England, Scotland and Wales.

Throughout, the pub has been restored to its former glory – reflected in the name change – thanks to the refurbishment which uncovered its original, internal and external tiling dating back to the 1800s. In addition, inside, the pub now boasts a neutral, earthy colour palette, a new bar area, brand new furniture and traditional wooden-style flooring as well as quirky new fixtures and fittings in keeping with the pub’s historic charm. As an entertainment-orientated venue, the interior is complete with several flat screen televisions featuring horse racing channels along with a brand new pool table and darts board to encourage the formation of local teams.

Outside, the Kings Head has received brand new lighting and signage, complementing the bottle green tiling, to greet customers. The pub also features one of the local area’s largest beer gardens, which was refurbished a few years ago, complete with approximately 10 wooden benches.

The Kings Head celebrated the reopening last Friday with a special performance from local father-daughter duo, The Stand Inns, followed by a live DJ set.

The pub offers a wide range of drinks promotions, including Wine Wednesday, where customers can get £2 off a bottle, Fizz Friday, offering customers a bottle of fizz for £10, along with cocktails, bottle and shot deals throughout the week.

Cameron Warburton, Operator of the Kings Head, said: “We were thrilled to reopen the King’s Head to the community last week – opening night was a huge success with really positive feedback from customers. It’s been a very exciting journey bringing our vision for the pub to life and restoring all of its wonderful traditional features.

I’d like to thank everyone at Proper Pubs, our team here at the Kings Head and of course local residents for all their support so far – we can’t wait for what the future holds!”

On top of the fantastic drink’s selection, Cameron will be hosting a busy schedule of regular entertainment including live music and DJ sets every weekend to further bring the community together. The operator will also work hard to collect food to donate to the local foodbank and later this year, he’s hoping to run a fundraising day in aid of Proper Pubs’ charity partner, Claire House Hospice.

Matthew Gurney, Operations Director for Proper Pubs, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Cameron and his husband, Matthew, to The Kings Head. The pub looks absolutely fantastic and I’m thrilled that opening night was so successful. I look forward to seeing our operators bring the Kings Arms back to the heart of the community and I wish them the very best of luck for this next chapter!”

Proper Pubs is always looking for ways to support its communities through an annual schedule of events and fundraising initiatives and in March 2024, it was crowned Community Pub Operator at the Publican Awards. Most recently, the Group collected over 20,000 Easter Eggs to donate to communities in need and raised nearly £100,000 in just three months for various local charities across the UK. Last year, Proper Pubs also successfully donated enough food to local foodbanks across the UK to feed 1,300 people for a week and has also been recognised UK-wide defibrillator installation campaign which has already saved 11 lives.
